On September 9, 2019, a hero driver in Embu County, Kenya, risked his life to avert a disaster by driving a burning fuel tanker out of a petrol station at Rwika market.

County Commissioner Galgallo Abdullahi congratulated Mr. James Mugo, 50, and gave him KES 10,000 for his bravery.

Mr. Mugo had been emptying fuel from the tanker when it suddenly caught fire, emitting thick smoke.

Without hesitation, he drove the tanker to a nearby forest, away from the densely populated market, where explosions rocked the area and fear gripped the residents.

After reaching a safe distance, Mr. Mugo jumped out and escaped for his life as the tanker was engulfed in flames.

The tanker was carrying 8,000 litres of fuel when the fire broke out.

Presenting the cash prize to the driver, Mr. Abdullahi noted that Mr. Mugo's quick action saved many lives and prevented property worth millions of shillings from being destroyed.

"The driver acted boldly and I must reward him," said Mr. Abdullahi.
