On August 29, 2019, two young men robbed a mini supermarket in Umoja 3, Nairobi, before targeting an M-Pesa shop belonging to Sergeant Reuben Kagia.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects shot and killed the soldier in the presence of his wife, making off with an unknown amount of money.
Kenyan vigilante 'Hessy Was Dandora' has claimed responsibility for the deaths of the two suspects, sharing gory photos of their bodies on his Facebook page.
On his page, Hessy warned other members of the gang to surrender their guns to the police or face a similar fate.
He also shared a CCTV video allegedly from the ChockMatt Supermarket, where the suspects allegedly stole from shoppers at gunpoint.
"On 29th August, 2019, they robbed a mini supermarket (CHOCKMATT) within Umoja 3 at around 2000hrs (refer to the CCTV footage), after a few hours the same day, they went and robbed another Mpesa shop that belongs to Sergeant Reuben Kagia of Kenya Air Force and in the process, they shot and killed him in presence of his wife," Hessy posted.
Former police Chief Joseph Boinnet had previously denied any association with Hessy wa Dandora, stating that the person behind the Facebook accounts was a civilian passionate about security matters.
