On September 9, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at the Multimedia University, leaving a student in critical condition at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The student, a first-year student, was hit by a matatu at the university's main entrance, prompting a wave of protests from fellow students.

Blaming the police for inaction, the students claimed that matatus belonging to the Ongataline sacco have been overcharging them and harassing them.

"We would like to warn Ongataline that this is the last time they will be harassing us," a protesting student said. "You cannot tell us the fare is 50 bob then later change to 100 bob and if we refuse to pay the 100 bob you make us alight the vehicle before reaching our destination."

Motorists using the busy Magadi Road were left stranded as anti-riot police attempted to disperse the protesters, who retaliated by hurling stones at the officers.
