Published on September 9, 2019, a speech by veteran politician Mangosuthu Buthelezi in Johannesburg was disrupted by a rowdy crowd.

Buthelezi, a Zulu leader during apartheid and former leader of South Africa's opposition Inkatha Freedom Party, was heckled throughout his address.

He had come to Jules Park in Johannesburg as a mediator to address the recent attacks, but his message was met with resistance.

At least 10 people, including two foreign nationals, had been killed in the violence over the last week, with police arresting over 420 people.

However, on Sunday, groups of men carrying clubs marched down the streets of Johannesburg, singing 'foreigners must go back to where they came from', according to Soweten Live.

The unrest had subsided by Thursday, but the tensions remained high, with some people feeling that foreigners were taking their jobs in a country with high unemployment.
