On September 9, 2019, Choppies supermarket announced its plan to exit the Kenyan market, leading to the layoff of over 200 workers. The company attributed the decision to reduced business.
According to a letter from Choppies' Human Resource Manager, Joshua Were, the termination was necessary due to redundancy. The employees received a one-month notice, during which they will continue to receive salaries up to the end of September.
However, the supermarket advised employees transitioning out not to report to their stations during the notice period. The notice ends on September 30, 2019. The affected workers are required to clear with the company before September 15.
Choppies had conversations with the Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers (KUCFAW) for a suitable compensation plan before issuing the termination letters.
