Published on September 9, 2019, the IPOA investigation comes weeks after a report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) concluded that the inmate, Simon Nduro Gitahi, was beaten to death.

Gitahi, who was serving a life sentence, was allegedly tortured by warders at the prison two months ago.

The IPOA has written to the Commissioner General of Prisons, notifying him of the investigation and seeking to determine the involvement of the warders in the death.

“If there is any evidence of excessive use of force, those involved will face the law,” said Doreen Muthaura, a commissioner at IPOA.

The IPOA has seen a significant increase in cases of police brutality, with 3,237 cases reported between 2018 and 2019, compared to 524 cases between 2012 and 2013.

“People are reporting cases of police brutality because IPOA has created awareness against the vice and opened offices in the grassroots,” Muthaura said.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is reviewing the murder of popular Kalenjin musician Diana Chelele, with a view to filing fresh charges against Eric Musila, an officer who was previously acquitted due to shoddy investigations.
