On September 8, 2019, Republican Mark Sanford announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election, challenging incumbent President Donald Trump.

Sanford, a former governor of South Carolina, made the announcement in a video posted on his website, stating that he was running to 'make sure that the Republican Party is a party of ideas, not just a party of personalities.'

Sanford's candidacy is seen as a long shot, but it marks the second Republican challenger to Trump's re-election bid. The first challenger, Bill Weld, announced his candidacy in April 2019.
