On September 8, 2019, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cautioned the Taliban that they would face increased military pressure if they persisted in their attacks.
Speaking to ABC's 'This Week' program, Pompeo expressed hope that the Taliban would change their behavior and recommit to previous agreements.
However, the talks were abruptly canceled by President Donald Trump after a US serviceman was killed in a car bombing in Kabul on Thursday, September 5, 2019.
Trump had invited Taliban leaders and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to meet him at Camp David on Sunday, but ultimately decided against it.
Pompeo emphasized that the US would not reduce its support for the Afghan security forces, which have been fighting hard against the Taliban.
"I hope it's the case the Taliban will change their behavior and recommit to things we've talking about. In the end this will be resolved through a series of conversations," Pompeo said.
