On September 8, 2019, US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter issued a stern warning to Kenyans, cautioning them against voting for leaders implicated in corruption.
McCarter emphasized that corruption has become normalized in Kenya, with citizens often electing individuals with questionable records in exchange for handouts.
"It seems normal in Kenya for someone to offer you a bribe or share a crooked deal and it goes without being condemned," McCarter stated.
He lamented that leaders accused of corruption and serious economic crimes are easily elected to public offices, while individuals with impeccable records are overlooked.
McCarter urged Kenyans to take an active role in fighting corruption, stating, "We need to take the war on corruption seriously, punish thieves who steal from the poor to make themselves wealthier. It is time they stepped aside."
He also condemned communities for protecting individuals accused of stealing taxpayers' resources, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the people to prevent corruption from invading public spaces.
