Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Chairman Wycliffe Omucheyi has been retired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), effective May 3, 2018, due to his age.
According to a letter dated June 19, 2019, signed by S.M Njuguna on behalf of TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia, Omucheyi was born on May 3, 1958, and therefore attained 60 years, the age for compulsory retirement on May 3, 2018.
However, Omucheyi has denied the claim, insisting that he was born in 1961 and will be leaving the union next year as chairman. He promised to provide supporting documents on Monday.
Omocheyi's retirement comes at a time when the union is facing challenges, including the deregistration of its secretary general, Wilson Sossion, who is in court fighting to keep his position.
The union's constitution requires officials to leave office six months before their retirement date, and Omucheyi's replacement, Collins Oyuu, is expected to take over in December during the Annual Delegates Conference in Kakamega.
