On September 7, 2019, a daring heist shook the nation when Sh72 million went missing during a cash-in-transit operation in Nairobi. The thieves, posing as cash-in-transit officers, made off with 13 bags loaded with the money.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects bought a Subaru Forester on the same day of the theft using the stolen money. The DCI also revealed that part of the Sh72 million was stolen as G4S employees transported it in a van while the rest was withdrawn from an ATM.
After a thorough investigation, detectives from the DCI arrested two police officers, Constables Chris Ayienda and Vincent Owour, in connection to the heist. The suspects were arrested in Kisii and Kendu Bay, respectively.
During the arrest, the detectives recovered Sh3 million from Constable Owuor's house in Kendu Bay and Sh4 million from Constable Ayienda in Kisii. The recovered amount brings the total to Sh7 million.
The police have established that the suspects were planning to travel to Uganda. The two officers are currently in police custody, facing charges related to the theft.
