Tom Holland's thoughts on a gay Spider-Man have been a topic of discussion since 2019, when he expressed his support for the idea in an interview with The Times prior to the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
At the time, Holland stated, "I don't know about the future of the character, but I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years... The world isn't as simple as a straight white guy. It doesn't end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person."
Fast forward to a GQ video where Holland went "undercover" on the internet to answer fans' questions. When asked about his previous comments, Holland clarified that the question asked was whether he thought there should be a gay Spider-Man, not whether he wanted Spider-Man to be gay.
However, Holland reiterated his support for the idea, saying, "I think that would be a very progressive way to kind of create a new character. So yeah, I don't see [why not]. I think there should be, one day, and I hope that I get to share the screen with that person."
With the character's fate within the MCU currently up in the air due to disputes between Sony and Marvel, perhaps fans will end up with an even greater number of varied, diverse versions of the character on-screen.
