Published on September 7, 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas, bringing catastrophic winds and flooding to the island nation.

A Scottish mother living in the Bahamas described the scene as 'despairing' after witnessing the destruction caused by the storm.

She told the Daily Record that sharks were swimming through residential areas among floating corpses, and that the death toll was far higher than reported.

"The city's had flooding but on Grand Abaco, 90 miles away, the towns have been wiped out," she said. "Sharks are swimming up and around residential areas and corpses are just floating everywhere."

The death toll from Hurricane Dorian has risen to 43, with 35 people dying on the Abacos Islands and eight in Grand Bahama.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, with a representative for Prime Minister Hubert Minnis stating that the number of deaths is expected to rise significantly.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, the storm surge inundated the Outer Banks' Ocracoke Island, cutting off power and submerging many homes and buildings.

North Carolina Governor Ray Cooper described the flooding as 'catastrophic,' with floodwaters coming halfway up to kitchen countertops.
