Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas on Sunday, bringing with it winds of up to 225mph and causing widespread destruction.

A Scottish mum living in the Bahamas described the scene as 'total disaster' after witnessing the devastation firsthand.

'Sharks are swimming up and round residential areas and corpses are just floating everywhere,' she told the Daily Record.

The death toll from the storm has risen to 43, with 35 people dying on the Abacos Islands and eight in Grand Bahama.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, with a representative for Prime Minister Hubert Minnis warning that the number of deaths is expected to rise significantly.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, the storm surge inundated the Outer Banks' Ocracoke Island, cutting off power and submerging many homes and buildings.

North Carolina Governor Ray Cooper described the flooding as 'catastrophic,' with floodwaters coming halfway up to kitchen countertops.

Despite the devastation, the storm is expected to bring tropical storm winds to Nantucket Island and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts early on Saturday.
