On Thursday, a daring heist at a Standard Chartered Bank ATM in Nairobi West left investigators scrambling to track down the culprits. The plot thickened when detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two police officers in separate incidents in Kisii and Kendu Bay.
According to the DCI, the suspects, an administration officer and his general duty colleague, were part of a gang that stole money from the bank's ATM. The gang's plan was to escape to Uganda, but police caught up with them, foiling their escape.
Chris Ayenda Machogu, an administration officer, was arrested in Kisii and recovered 4 million shillings. He then led detectives to an hideout in Kendu Bay, where Wycliffe Owuor, another police officer, was arrested while in possession of 3 million shillings.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had bought a Subaru Forester on the same day of the heist using part of the stolen money. The heist itself occurred on Thursday, when men posing as police officers stole 13 bags of money worth Sh72 million from the Standard Chartered Bank and G4S in Nairobi.
