On September 6, 2019, a fire broke out at Chogoria Girls Boarding Primary in Tharaka Nithi, forcing the school to send its pupils home for a week.

According to reports, the fire destroyed personal effects but fortunately, there were no casualties.

The incident occurred just a day after another fire attempt was foiled on Tuesday night, when a piece of cloth was found burning at the doorstep of a dormitory with a jerrycan of paraffin nearby.

County Director of Education Bridget Wambua met with school officials and decided that the pupils should go home until September 16, when the first group of Standard Eight candidates will be expected back.

Standard Seven pupils will report on September 17, while those in Standard Five and Six will report on September 18, accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Maara subcounty Deputy County Commissioner James Wambua assured parents and teachers that those involved in the fire will be brought to justice.

Parents also agreed that CCTV cameras should be installed to improve security at the school.
