On September 6, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested gospel rapper Kamlesh Kagaba, whose real name is Patrick Kagaba, in connection with the Sh72 million stolen in a daring ATM heist in Nairobi.

According to the police, two vehicles used during the heist were found in a garage in Kikuyu, one of which was being repainted from white to black in an attempt to conceal its identity.

The rapper, who has been in the music industry since 2011, uses his music to empower and transform the youth. His arrest has sparked outrage among his fellow musicians, who have taken to Twitter to protest his detention.

Juliani, a fellow rapper, tweeted that Kagaba was arrested at his garage and that his whereabouts are unknown. He expressed concern about the due process followed in the arrest and whether Kagaba is being represented.

On Saturday, detectives recovered Sh7 million of the stolen money, and two police officers, Administration Police constable Chris Ayienda Machogu and police constable Vincent Owour, were arrested in possession of Sh4 million and Sh3 million, respectively.

The detectives also recovered a vehicle registration number KCB 649Z, which they say was bought using the stolen money.
