Published on September 7, 2019, a British investor in the hospitality industry has expressed optimism about the Kenyan Coast's potential as a top tourist destination.

Ainsley Duncombe, a British investor and proprietor of African Resort International, says the Coast has what it takes to attract tourists and investors alike.

"We believe the Kenyan market is stable when it comes to local vacations. More Kenyans love to enjoy the coastline and if they could do that combined with saving money they will do it, and in great numbers," said Duncombe.

He bought the resort from an Italian investor who managed it for the first few years and offers members an opportunity to own luxurious vacation property locally, without worrying about management, through a concept called fractional ownership.

The agreement runs for 99 years, providing investment security to owners. Those who get into the partnership get to enjoy holidays in the units they own, while at the same time earning when they are not in the resort.

"The greatest benefit is that you can save money but still have family holidays," Duncombe states, highlighting the appeal of the concept.

His sentiments come at a time when Watamu is enjoying the status of a leading tourist destination, with attractive beaches. It is expected that the demand for the coast will spike over the next few years, hence, the need for greater transport links to Watamu.

Currently, there is no rail service from Mombasa to other parts of the coast. Duncombe states that Watamu still remains a favorable destination in the coastal region due to its proximity to the Malindi International Airport.
