Laikipia Women Representative Cate Waruguru has publicly criticized former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri for announcing his candidacy for the Laikipia East parliamentary seat, accusing him of undermining party dynamics.
Speaking during a public event on January 29, Waruguru argued that Kiunjuri's decision to contest an elected position contradicts his role as a party kingmaker. "You cannot serve as a kingmaker while seeking an elective position," she stated, urging him to prioritize party cohesion over personal ambitions.
The lawmaker also addressed Kiunjuri's public criticisms of Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, questioning his political alignment. "Why do you attack Ruto if your party is a village-based organization? If you claim national ambitions, why react to local grievances?" she challenged.
Waruguru highlighted the ongoing tension between the two figures, noting their competing interests in the Laikipia East seat. She previously urged Kiunjuri in November 2022 to focus on youth candidates for local and national positions, stating, "Leaders of your caliber should aim for the presidency, not local contests."
Kiunjuri was removed from his cabinet role in January 2020 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The dispute reflects broader factional struggles within Kenyan politics, with Waruguru positioning herself as a vocal critic of what she describes as inconsistent political behavior.
