On September 7, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a Sh 72 million ATM heist in Nairobi. The detectives recovered Sh 7 million of the stolen cash and arrested two police officers in connection with the theft.
According to the DCI, Administration Police constable Chris Ayienda Machogu was arrested in possession of Sh 4 million in Kisii. Upon interrogation, he led the detectives to police constable Vincent Owour, where Sh 3 million was recovered from his house in Kendu Bay.
The detectives also recovered a motor vehicle and two other vehicles used in the robbery. One of the vehicles, a Toyota Noah, had been to a body shop and had received a fresh coat of paint to make it impossible for police officers to trace it.
The suspects are in police custody waiting to be arraigned following the conclusion of initial investigation. Detectives said the recovered vehicle, a red Subaru Forester, was bought on the day of the heist using the stolen money.
