On September 7, 2019, the National Treasury visited the Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Revenue Authority in Mombasa, where Acting Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani emphasized the importance of using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) for cargo transportation.

According to Yattani, the SGR will ensure the country remains competitive in the transport sector, while also addressing the issue of businessmen evading payment of tax.

He dismissed claims that 100 percent utilization of SGR for cargo evacuation would render people in the road transport sector jobless, stating that more opportunities would open up for them given the ongoing port projects.

Yattani further explained that the SGR will help curb the situation where cargo owners evaded paying tax due to the lack of efficient customs payment and clearance processes.
