On September 7, 2019, a local politician in Nyamira was arrested by police over an allegation of defilement.
Magwagwa Ward Representative Fred Nyachae Omaiyo is accused of defiling a 17-year-old girl, according to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba.
The girl, a Form Four student from a Kisumu school, had gone missing a few days prior but later claimed she had been abducted, Mr Mariba said.
"The girl's mother had reported at Ekerenyo Police Station that her daughter was missing," Mr Mariba said.
However, the girl later claimed she had been abducted and detained by Mr Omaiyo at a Kisii hotel, Mr Mariba added.
The girl was examined at Ekerenyo Sub-County Hospital.
Mr Omaiyo is currently in police custody and will be arraigned on Monday, Mr Mariba said.
Mr Omaiyo has a history of controversy, having been arrested in January 2019 for disrupting a meeting convened by his colleagues in Kisumu.
