President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) to collaborate with state agencies to standardize meat products for export during a re-opening event at its Athi River facility on May 24, 2021.
The president emphasized opportunities in European and Middle Eastern markets, citing the African continental free trade agreement as a catalyst for the livestock sector. He highlighted the need to leverage the supply chain for hides and skins through revitalized tannery operations.
KMC, transferred to the Ministry of Defence in September 2020, faces ongoing legal challenges over the move. Kenyatta defended the decision, noting past administrations failed to resolve financial mismanagement and delayed farmer payments.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma confirmed the commission's business reorganization includes settling debts to farmers within 72 hours, following years of unpaid compensation for livestock supplies.
