On July 2018, a significant amount of heroin and cash went missing from the Mombasa Law Courts, sparking a thorough investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the DCI, the exhibits were handled 'recklessly', leading to the loss of 10kg of heroin valued at Sh30 million and cash of various currencies amounting to more than Sh600,000.

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, including Mombasa Principal Magistrate Edgar Kagoni, Mr. Abdalla Awadh Abubakar, Mr. Lawrence Thoya Bayan, and Mr. Onesmus Momanyi.

The suspects will be charged with obstruction with intent to defeat justice and aiding and abetting trafficking in narcotics.
