Kenya Lionesses fly-half Grace Adhiambo Okulu, 23, has credited rugby with providing her a second chance after growing up in poverty in Rhonda Estate, Nakuru. The Spotlight Academy student, who made her international debut at 17 during the 2016 World Sevens Series in France, has since become a key player in the team qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Okulu transitioned from football to rugby against her mother's wishes, a decision that reshaped her family's circumstances. "Sports has given me a name. Rugby has given me a good life, a second chance, and an education," she told the Olympic Channel. "I can now support my family with earnings from rugby."
Her journey included securing a school scholarship through national team coach Felix Oloo, allowing her to pursue education while competing internationally. Okulu has participated in the Africa Women’s Cup, 2018 Commonwealth Games qualifiers, 2018 Hong Kong Sevens, and 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup qualifiers.
Oloo, who mentored Okulu since her primary school days, praised her versatility, noting her ability to play multiple positions. "She can play in almost all positions—scrumhalf, fly-half, centre, or winger," he said. "It was difficult for her to balance school and rugby, so I often hid her age to protect her morale."
Okulu, who missed the 2016 Rio Olympics due to academic commitments, expressed excitement about the 2020 Games. "I can’t wait to compete in my first Olympics; it’s the biggest stage," she said. "It will change our lives, our mindset, while boosting our game."
