On Sunday, the second edition of the Kaptagat Half Marathon will be held, with the theme of 'Sports for Conservation' guiding the event.

The race will cover a distance of approximately 21 kilometers, traversing the two counties of Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu before finishing at Strawbag in Uasin Gishu.

Defending champion Cynthia Cherop has pulled out of the competition, citing inadequate preparations, which means a new champion will be crowned in the women's category.

Philemon Rono won the men's race last year in 62:23, while defending champion Cynthia Cherop won in 71:30.

Three-time World Half Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor, who is the race ambassador, expressed his pride in being associated with the event and his enthusiasm for seeing future champions emerge from such competitions.

“As we enter the second edition of the race, I want to commend the organisers for their good work. Such races are good for the young upcoming athletes to nurture their talents,” said Kamworor.

According to race director Patrick Birgen, the event aims to reach out to many locals who want to run and promote the conservation of the forest.

“Our goal is to conserve the forest, which provides good training ground for our runners as well as wild animals. If the forest is not protected, our athletes won't have a place to train and enjoy the serene natural surroundings,” said Birgen.
