McDonald Mariga Wanyama's decision to run for Kibra MP has left many questioning his leadership material. Is he a confident fool or has someone misled him?

On September 7, 2019, Mariga was formally declared the Jubilee Party candidate for the upcoming Kibra parliamentary by-election. His cringeworthy interview, in which he insisted 'tutashinda' (we will win), has left many wondering if he is truly cut out for leadership.

Mariga's background is undeniably impressive. Born in Nairobi's Muthurwa estate, he rose to international football stardom, becoming the first Kenyan to play in the European Champions League. He has played for various international clubs, including Inter Milan under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho.

However, his decision to run for Kibra MP has been met with skepticism. Mariga's lack of clarity and vision for the constituency has raised concerns about his ability to lead. Politics requires a certain nimbleness of mind and clarity of thought, which Mariga seems to lack.

Mariga's legacy is at risk of being destroyed by his misguided ambition. Instead of mentoring the next generation of Kenyan footballers, he is allowing himself to be used by politicians to settle scores. He should focus on leaving a lasting legacy by charting the path for younger footballers who aspire to be like him.

Mariga should understand that his success and influence ought to count for something other than being used for selfish political ambitions. He should use his influence to improve the quality of life of the many youngsters who will come after him.

It's not too late for Mariga to pull out of this race and do the honourable thing. Leave politics to politicians, and focus on mentoring the next generation of footballers. Yours, Mariga, is a higher calling.
