On September 6, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a significant breakthrough in the Ksh.72 million ATM heist case, arresting three suspects believed to have been part of the gang responsible for the crime.

The suspects were apprehended after the recovery of 13 empty cash boxes that were stolen from the G4S team in Thogoto Forest, Kiambu. The boxes had been stolen during a brazen daytime robbery in Nairobi West, where criminals posing as police officers on escort robbed G4S personnel of Ksh.72 million.

According to reports, the G4S team had collected the cash from G4S headquarters on Witu Road and were en route to different bank ATMs when they were ambushed. The thieves, who were dressed as police officers, turned on the G4S team once they arrived at the Standard Chartered Bank ATM in Nairobi West.

DCI Director George Kinoti had vowed to track down and arrest the perpetrators of the heist, promising that they would face justice. The court has since allowed an application by prosecution to have six G4S employees detained for 7-days at Lang'ata police station to allow police complete their investigations.

Both of the Toyota Noah vehicles used in the heist had been to a body shop and had received a fresh coat of paint to make it impossible for police officers to trace them. However, the DCI detectives were able to recover the vehicles, bringing the suspects one step closer to justice.
