ODM leader Raila Odinga is making significant strides in Kisii as he seeks to consolidate support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) ahead of the anticipated constitutional referendum.

On Wednesday, the former Prime Minister met with Governors James Ongwae and John Nyagarama, who are at the forefront of his agenda in the region.

The meeting, held at Mr. Odinga's Capitol Hill office, was also attended by Kisii Senator Prof. Sam Ongeri, Woman Representative Janet Ongera, MPs Richard Onyonka, Jimmy Angweny, Samuel Arama, and Simba Arati.

According to sources, the two governors, who were elected on an ODM ticket, will play a crucial role in implementing initiatives by Mr. Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta, who became allies after their historic March 9, 2018 handshake.

The meeting aimed to counter Deputy President William Ruto's inroads in the region, with sources indicating that the leaders who attended will be key in scuttling his efforts.

Mr. Ruto enjoys the support of most MPs in Kisii, with Deputy Governor Joash Maangi leading the brigade.

When contacted for comment, the two governors and Mr. Onyonka declined to provide details of the meeting, stating that it was not unique.

“Mr. Odinga has been meeting with various groups from across Kenya,” said Mr. Onyonka.

The Kisii community has historically been a strong supporter of Mr. Odinga, and he has been enjoying backing from both Kisii and Nyamira counties after support for him faded in the 2017 election.
