On August 17, 2019, Doris Wako and her husband Bernard Levy Mwato exchanged vows at Our Lady of Grace and Compassion Primary School in Mundika, Matayos Constituency. The couple had been together since high school and had five children.
Just 19 days later, Bernard collapsed and died after receiving a cow as a wedding gift from his uncle in Nyakhobi, Funyula. The uncle had promised the gift on their wedding day.
Doris told Citizen TV that she accompanied her husband to his uncle's home on Wednesday to collect the gift. However, things took a tragic turn when Bernard was given the gift, and he collapsed. He was rushed to Busia County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
As burial preparations were underway at their home in Khung'ungu, family members called for a speedy investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bernard's death.
