On September 6, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta paid tribute to the late Robert Mugabe, describing him as a man of courage who was never afraid to fight for what he believed in.
According to President Kenyatta, Mugabe's legacy as a Pan-Africanist and freedom fighter will never be forgotten.
"Words cannot convey the magnitude of the loss as former President Mugabe was an elder statesman, a freedom fighter and a Pan-Africanist," President Kenyatta said in a statement.
Robert Mugabe, the 95-year-old former President of Zimbabwe, passed away on Friday morning in Singapore, where he had been seeking treatment for an unknown illness.
Leaders from across the continent, including Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga, South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, and African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, sent messages of condolence to the people of Zimbabwe.
South Africa's Julius Malema said, "I'm saddened by the passing of our martyr & giant of the African Revolution cde President Robert Mugabe. Let's continue the fight & protect his legacy. We must not allow our enemies to tell us how to remember him; we know our heroes. May his soul rest in revolutionary peace."
The U.S. embassy in Zimbabwe also paid tribute to Mugabe, saying, "We join the world in reflecting on his legacy in securing Zimbabwe's independence."
President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, remembered Mugabe as an icon of liberation, saying, "Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
