On September 5, 2019, Dr Ismail Wais, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) special envoy to South Sudan, met with President Salva Kiir to discuss the status of the September 2018 peace deal.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday, focused on three critical tasks necessary for the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU) in November.
According to Igad, the discussion centered on security arrangements, the reconstitution of the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) Commission, and the number of states and their boundaries.
Dr Wais called on President Kiir to disburse the balance of the pledged $100 million to speed up the implementation of the peace agreement.
President Kiir promised to nominate candidates for the reconstituted DDR Commission 'without further delay' and expressed his readiness to meet with main opposition leader Dr Riek Machar in Juba anytime to discuss the way forward for the formation of the unity government.
Igad remains committed to engaging non-signatory groups to join the peace process.
