Robert Mugabe's ousting from power in 2017 was not an isolated incident. Several other presidents have been forced out of office after ruling for more than 40 years.

  • Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe's longest-serving president, was ousted in 2017 after 30 years in power.
  • Omar al Bashir, Sudan's president since 1989, was forced out in 2019 after three decades in power.
  • Blaise Compaore, Burkina Faso's president since 1987, was ousted in 2014 after 27 years in power.
  • Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal's president from 2000 to 2012, was forced out in 2012 after two years in power.
  • Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's de facto leader since 1969, was killed in 2011 after 42 years in power.
  • Mamadou Tandja, Niger's president from 1999 to 2010, was ousted in 2010 after 11 years in power.
  • Yahya Jammeh, Gambia's president since 1994, was forced out in 2017 after 21 years in power.
  • Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's president from 2012 to 2013, was ousted in 2013 after one year in power.
  • Raimundo Pereira, Guinea Bissau's president from 2012, was ousted in 2012 after a few months in power.
