Spain captain Sergio Ramos has explained the reason behind his goal celebration during their 2-1 win over Romania in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

On September 6, 2019, Ramos scored a penalty for Spain, but his celebration, which involved mimicking wearing glasses, infuriated the home fans and earned him a yellow card.

Ramos revealed that the celebration was for his nephew, who also wears glasses, and that the referee later apologized to him after understanding the reason behind the gesture.

"The yellow card came from some confusion," Ramos said after the match.

"It was for my nephew. We both wear glasses and it was for him. I did it to cheer him up, to dedicate the goal to him," he added.

Spain went on to win the match, with Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer doubling the advantage for the visitors two minutes after the restart.

But newly-signed Galatasaray striker Florin Andone got one back for Romania, and Kepa Arrizabalaga made a stunning last-minute save to ensure a 2-1 victory for La Roja.
