September 6, 2019, marked the passing of former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, who died at the age of 95 after a long illness.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced Mugabe's death on Twitter, describing him as an 'icon of liberation' and a 'pan-Africanist' who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.
“His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” President Mnangagwa said.
Mugabe had been receiving treatment in a Singaporean hospital for an unknown illness, with the last public sighting of him being in July 2019, when pictures of him with his wife Grace and son Robert Junior emerged on social media.
His 37-year-rule as President of Zimbabwe was marked by a collapsed economy, oppression, and violence, which ultimately led to his ouster in 2017.
Mugabe leaves behind his wife Grace and four children: Bona, Robert Junior, Chatunga, and Michael.
