From Hobby to Business: Samuel Mboya's Donut Thrills KE

Samuel Mboya, a 23-year-old entrepreneur, turned his baking hobby into a successful business, Donut Thrills KE, after graduating from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in 2018.

Published on September 6, 2019, Samuel's story is a testament to the power of passion and hard work. He started making donuts as a hobby while still in university, but after graduating, he decided to take his baking business seriously.

Today, Donut Thrills KE is a thriving start-up that makes donuts in different flavors and sells them mostly to students. Samuel's basic ingredients include flour, sugar, baking powder, milk, butter, and essence, depending on the flavor.

He sells the plain donuts for Sh150 a packet, Sh180 for the dark chocolate type, and Sh200 for the white chocolate kind. An assorted pack goes for Sh200. Samuel targets offices in Nairobi and its environs, but students, especially those around Juja where he lives, are his main clients.

With a clear vision and dedication to his business, Samuel has been able to take care of his basic needs and even employ a couple of young people on contract to help with production and distribution. He plans to expand his business to other counties and is working towards getting certification from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) so that he can supply his products in supermarkets.
