Published on September 6, 2019, the sacking of Maina Njoroge as CEO of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has exposed deep-seated power struggles within the organization.

According to sources, the board gave Mr. Njoroge marching orders on Friday last week after he resumed duty from a forced leave. The move is seen as a culmination of a long-standing feud between Mr. Njoroge and a section of the board.

"You can't pinpoint one thing and say this is why the CEO was fired. The board just wanted him out for no specific reason and it is now causing jitters," said a source.

Mr. Njoroge's sacking comes just 15 months into his tenure, having replaced Joel Mabonga who retired last year. The new board, which Mr. Njoroge was also part of as secretary, was sworn in on October 5 last year.

Insiders say the friction between the board and the executive at IPOA has been fueled by the new board's full-time terms, which has generated tension with the old board's part-time basis.

Before his appointment, Mr. Njoroge was the IPOA director of business services for five years and held the CEO's position in an acting capacity for nine months between September 2013 to May 2014.
