Twin sisters Mary Wangari Mburu and Jane Mukami died in a hit-and-run collision on June 2, 2022, in Gathanji village, Githingiri, Kiambu County. The sisters, married to twin brothers, were members of the Woman's Guild-PCEA Geoffrey Gathu Memorial Church and were returning from a fellowship event when the accident occurred.
Witnesses reported the driver swerved onto the sidewalk to avoid an oncoming vehicle, striking the sisters before fleeing the scene. Local residents indicated the driver feared community retaliation, with authorities continuing to seek the suspect.
June Waweru, then-running mate for Kiambu Governor James Nyoro, expressed condolences at the funeral, stating, "They were till their time of demise dedicated PCEA Women's Guild members. My sincere condolences to the two families." Church members described the women as cheerful community figures who will be deeply missed.
Community leaders and church members have called for thorough investigations and accountability, as police work to identify the driver who fled the crash. The incident has intensified local demands for justice following the sisters' deaths.
