KCB Bank was awarded the 'Best Sustainable Finance Institution in Kenya' by Global Finance in 2022, acknowledging its commitment to climate-conscious banking practices and socio-economic development programs.
The accolade highlights institutions advancing sustainable finance through projects that address climate change impacts, build resilience, and promote long-term environmental stewardship, aligning with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
KCB Group CEO Paul Russo emphasized the bank's dual focus on profitability and community impact, stating, "We are privileged to be the top mover of the Sustainability Agenda. The win reinforces our commitment to building a brand that is not only focused on profits alone but on the customers and the communities we serve."
The bank aims to allocate 25% of its total loan portfolio to green investments by 2025, supporting Kenya's transition to a low-carbon economy. This target aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which call for a 45% reduction in global net carbon dioxide emissions from 2010 levels by 2030, with net-zero aspirations by 2050.
Global Finance Publisher Joseph Giarraputo noted that pandemic-driven disruptions and energy sector challenges have intensified focus on climate risks, while technological advancements offer new pathways for sustainable finance solutions.
In 2021, KCB received multiple international awards for sustainability, including Best Sustainable Bank in Kenya from the International Business Magazine and Most Valuable Banking Brand honors from Brand Finance and Finance Derivative.
