Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons Wanini Kireri passed away on May 31 after a short illness at AAR Hospital in Kiambu County. Her death marks the end of a career spanning four decades in Kenya's correctional system.
Kireri began her service in 1982 as a cadet officer, initially stationed at Lang’ata Women’s Prison. She rose through the ranks, becoming officer in charge at Embu Women’s Prison in 1986 and later a superintendent of prisons in 1993. Her expertise led to a role as a senior lecturer at Prisons College, where she shaped training programs for correctional officers.
In 2006, she made history as the first woman to lead Shimo la Tewa Prison, a male-only facility. Her appointment as Regional Prisons Commander in Nairobi in 2010 was followed by a pivotal role as Director of Legal Affairs at Prisons Headquarters in 2017. She concluded her career as the first female commandant at Ruiru Prisons Staff College, a position she held until her death.
Throughout her tenure, Kireri was instrumental in advancing prison reforms, focusing on staff training and institutional modernization. Her passing leaves a significant void in Kenya's corrections sector.
