Activist Boniface Mwangi has accused a close ally of Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga of endangering the coalition by aligning with President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mwangi argued that Odinga's decision to take responsibility for Kenyatta's governance failures risks undermining Azimio's credibility, emphasizing that accountability should fall on Deputy President William Ruto, who formed the current administration with the president.
In a social media post referencing 2022 succession politics, Mwangi stated, "Raila Odinga agreeing to be blamed for Uhuruto’s failings is dangerous. That blame should be Ruto’s, but Uhuru associating himself with Raila and Martha weakens Azimio." He urged Odinga and running mate Martha Karua to distance themselves from Kenyatta's government ahead of the August 9 General Election.
Silas Chepkeres Jakakimba, an Odinga ally, dismissed Mwangi's comments as politically motivated, accusing the activist of seeking to destabilize the campaign. Mwangi countered that Kenyatta is leveraging Odinga to "redeem himself through RAO," citing a 2020 photo of Karua and Mwangi at a Nairobi party office as evidence of ongoing coalition tensions.
Mwangi, a longtime critic of government human rights violations, previously ran for Starehe Constituency in the 2017 elections. Though he lost to musician Charles Njagua Kanyi, he has since advocated for Karua's nomination as Odinga's running mate, despite his 2022 assertions about coalition fragility.
