Kajiado County Woman Representative Janet Teyiaa has announced her decision not to contest the upcoming August General Elections, citing party unity as the primary motivation. The 38-year-old, who secured a landmark victory in the 2017 polls, will instead support Leah Sankaire as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the constituency. This move aligns with the Kenya Kwanza coalition's strategy to consolidate votes ahead of the presidential race.
Speaking at an economic forum in Kiserian, Teyiaa emphasized her confidence in UDA leader William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. "The party under Ruto's leadership is the most viable political force in Kenya. For unity and success in August, I've chosen to step aside and back my colleague," she stated. Teyiaa highlighted the potential benefits of Ruto's administration for local stakeholders, including farmers, hawkers, and transport operators.
The decision comes as UDA gubernatorial candidate Katoo ole Metito selects Judy Muthoni Pere as his running mate. Teyiaa praised the choice, noting its strategic value in appealing to women voters and marginalized communities. "This demonstrates Metito's commitment to addressing gender-specific challenges," she said. Metito's campaign focuses on UDA's growing influence in both Kajiado North and South constituencies, where he faces incumbent Joseph Lenku.
Kajiado, with 463,547 registered voters, is one of 13 key counties where the presidential race between Ruto and Raila Odinga remains closely contested. Analysts suggest Teyiaa's endorsement could strengthen UDA's prospects in the region.
