East African Breweries Plc (EABL) has initiated construction of a KSh1 billion microbrewery in Ruaraka, Nairobi, as part of its centenary celebrations for the 1922 founding of the company. The facility, adjacent to the Tusker brewery, will include brewing operations, a tasting area, taproom, and retail space, with an expected public opening in December 2022.
The project was announced by CEO Jane Karuku during a ground-breaking event, emphasizing the facility’s role in showcasing the brand’s heritage and future innovation. "Through this facility, EABL seeks to shape the future of the alcoholic beverage sector in the region through the development and release of craft and novelty beers," she stated.
The microbrewery will feature immersive experiences highlighting EABL’s 100-year history, including guided tastings, a beer garden, and a flagship store selling locally designed merchandise. Karuku noted the venue aims to become a top tourist attraction in East Africa, offering "a world-class brewery visitor experience that has never been seen before in the region."
"Our ambition is to have this facility join the league of top tourist attractions in Kenya; offering a world-class brewery visitor experience that has never been seen before in the East and Central African region," said Karuku.
The development aligns with EABL’s focus on fostering brewing talent and expanding its market presence across East Africa. The facility will also serve as an innovation hub for Diageo, the global drinks company of which EABL is a subsidiary.
