Four Kenyan police officers and a civilian have been charged with kidnapping and robbery following an alleged incident involving a Tanzanian businessman near the Kenya-Tanzania border in May 2022.
According to reports, the suspects were apprehended on May 29 while traveling toward Loitoktok Airstrip. They are accused of abducting the businessman near the border, transporting him to Nairobi, and extorting Ksh 80,000. Two vehicles, a Toyota NZE and a Mazda Demio, were used in the operation and later seized by authorities.
Police recovered a full set of uniforms, handcuffs, and communication devices from the suspects. A police report noted the group had been spotted at a petrol station on Loitoktok-Emali Road prior to their arrest. The suspects included three officers linked to Buruburu Police Station, though the station’s leadership declined to comment when contacted.
This incident follows a similar case in February 2022, when officers were arrested for extorting civilians in Kariobangi. That group targeted individuals without face masks, demanding payments during the pandemic. The current case highlights ongoing concerns about police misconduct, including the misuse of uniforms and equipment.
