Environmental advocate Anita Soina has been officially confirmed as a candidate for the Kajiado North parliamentary seat by the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the August 9 general election. The 21-year-old expressed deep emotion over the opportunity to represent her community.
"This is not for me, it is for us. The journey to Bunge is unstoppable and we are going to articulate all the issues affecting all of us in the right way with so much passion and boldness," Soina stated in a social media post.
Soina first announced her political ambitions in December 2021, emphasizing her connection to Kajiado North's challenges. Born to a Maasai father from the region, she described her candidacy as a continuation of her lifelong commitment to community development.
"It's here. People over profits. Every day it hurts me to see what the people go through... To me, the first step towards solving a problem is getting to that position of a problem solver. Twende Bunge tupiganie haki za wapiga kura!" she declared.
Despite mixed reactions to her political entry, Soina highlighted her extensive background in environmental advocacy and leadership. She founded the Soina Foundation at 18, authored her first book at 20, and spoke at TEDx and COP26 conferences at 21.
