The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 1,000 employees over the coming years, triggering concerns at its Nairobi-based East African Bureau. The decision follows comments from Culture Secretary Nadine Dories in January 2022, when she confirmed the license fee would remain frozen at £159 ($201) annually for two years.
The UK’s television license, originally a radio license introduced in 1923 and extended to television in 1946, requires households watching live broadcasts to pay an annual fee. The current cost of £159 for a color license was set in 2021, while black-and-white licenses cost £53.50. The radio license was abolished in 1971.
The restructuring includes merging BBC World News and BBC News into a single 24-hour channel, which will likely lead to job cuts. This follows a 2020 round of 450 layoffs aimed at saving £800 million. The BBC employs approximately 5,000 people, with 2,000 journalists and over 1,500 based outside the UK.
The East African Bureau, established in Nairobi in November 2018, is the BBC’s largest international office, housing around 600 staff. It serves as the African headquarters and has hired numerous Kenyan journalists from local media outlets.
Additional changes include scrapping regional TV programs in Oxford and Cambridge, phasing out BBC Four and Children’s BBC as linear channels, and moving services to online platforms. Director-General Tim Davie stated the cuts would save £200 million annually, emphasizing the need to modernize the corporation to remain relevant in a digital age.
"This is our moment to build a digital-first BBC," Davie said. "A Reithian organization for the digital age, serving all with impartial, innovative content."
