Former Nyali MP Hezron Awiti Bollo has outlined plans to revitalize Mombasa's economy, emphasizing tourism and the blue economy if elected governor. The Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP) leader stated that the county's economic challenges stem from reliance on a port whose operations were relocated to Nairobi and Naivasha, leaving local resources strained.
Awiti proposed establishing a special fund to support tourism businesses recovering from pandemic-related losses, while also targeting the blue economy through modern fishing infrastructure and cold storage facilities. He emphasized creating employment opportunities by setting up sub-county industries and designated market spaces for traders.
Speaking at his Nyali residence, Awiti rejected allegations of political favoritism, accusing current leadership of failing to unify the county. He vowed to combat corruption and ensure equitable public service delivery, warning that those involved in graft would face legal consequences.
The VDP candidate confirmed his candidacy in the upcoming governor race, having submitted nomination papers to the IEBC. He called for peaceful campaigning, urging authorities to prevent disruptions at political events. Awiti also addressed past party affiliations, noting his 2013 split from ODM and 2017 gubernatorial bid under his current party.
