The 35-year-old Spaniard won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 after four hours and 21 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier, marking only the third time in his 17-year Paris career that he faced a five-set match.
The encounter renewed Nadal's historic rivalry with Djokovic, their 10th meeting at Roland Garros and 59th overall since their 2006 debut. Djokovic has defeated Nadal twice in Paris, including a 2015 quarter-final and a 2019 semi-final. "The only thing I can say is that I will be focused, try my best and fight until the end," Nadal said ahead of the high-stakes rematch.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked ninth, pushed Nadal to the limit, taking the first set before the veteran regained control. Nadal praised the Canadian's athleticism, calling him "one of the best in the world" with "great mobility." The Spaniard secured his 109th Roland Garros victory after converting his sixth break point in the final set.
Djokovic advanced to the quarter-finals with a straight-sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Argentina's Diego Schwartzman, extending his set-winning streak to 22 matches since his Italian Open title in May. "It’s a huge challenge and probably the biggest one that you can have here in Roland Garros," Djokovic said of facing Nadal.
In the women's draw, American teen Coco Gauff reached the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year, defeating Belgium's Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-0. Sloane Stephens, a 2018 runner-up, advanced after beating Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-0. Canadian sensation Leylah Fernandez made her first quarter-final appearance, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
