Kenyan tennis prodigy Angella Okutoyi secured a significant victory in her French Open Juniors debut, defeating Belgian player Amelie Van Impe 7-6, 6-4 on the clay courts of Stade Roland Garros. The 18-year-old, who claimed the 2021 Africa under-18 title, advanced to the second round where she will face Croatia's Petra Marcinko, who defeated Canadian Kayla Cross 6-1, 6-4.
Okutoyi's performance at the prestigious tournament followed mixed results in preparatory events in Italy. She was eliminated in the first round of the J1 Santa Croce Sull'Arno in May, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Kazakh Aruzhan Sagandikova, and later fell to Briton Ranah Akua Stoiber 6-1, 6-2 at the JA Milan tournament.
The 2018 Kenya Open champion has long idolized Serena Williams and made history in January 2022 by becoming the first Kenyan girl to win a junior Grand Slam match. She achieved this by defeating Italian qualifier Federica Urgesi at the Australian Open Juniors, a milestone that also made her the first Kenyan girl since 1978 to compete at a major tennis tournament.
Okutoyi's Australian Open run included a second-round upset of Australian player Zara Larke, matching the best-ever result by a Kenyan junior at a Grand Slam. She was eventually halted in the third round by Serbia's Lola Radivojevic.
