Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Wonie Bio paid tribute to four Kenyan soldiers who died during the 1998 United Nations Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (Unomsil), acknowledging their role in ending the nation's civil war.
The Kenyan contingent, part of the UN mission established to mediate between government forces and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels, lost Corporal Evanson Muthee, Corporal Jeremiah Obuya, Private Robert Wanyama, and Private Khamis Yunis Shurie in the line of duty.
A memorial candle was lit by Zainab Hawa Bangura, UN Office in Nairobi Director-General, during a ceremony at the International Peace Support Training Centre. Bio, a retired Brigadier-General, expressed gratitude to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), stating, "Their sacrifices contributed immensely to restoring peace in Sierra Leone."
Kenya's peacekeeping legacy dates to 1979 when it deployed troops to Zimbabwe's Commonwealth Monitoring Force. Over four decades, KDF personnel have participated in missions across 20 countries, including 2,963 soldiers in Unomsil from 1998 to 2005.
Legacy of Service ¶
Retired Lieutenant-General Daniel Opande, who led the Kenyan contingent in Sierra Leone, recounted negotiating the repatriation of the four soldiers' remains. He reflected on the country's post-war recovery, noting, "Having been sent by President Moi, I knew the country would rise again."
Current KDF operations include UN missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia. Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo highlighted Kenya's ongoing partnership with Sierra Leone, citing medical support during the Ebola outbreak.
Commitment to Peace ¶
Chief of Defence Forces Robert Kibochi emphasized Kenya's 12-year deployment to Somalia, stating, "Today is the day we renew our commitment to peace and security." The event drew military leaders, diplomats, and officials from Kenya's security agencies.
